- Enhance Your Landscaping Efficiency with Gyru-Star Screening Buckets
When you work in landscaping, groundworks, or utilities, one thing is guaranteed: the weather will rarely cooperate. Wet conditions are notorious for bringing screening operations to a grinding halt. Traditional screeners often struggle to separate wet or sticky materials. Screens clog, output drops, and before long, the entire process becomes slow, inefficient, or completely unworkable. For contractors who rely on recycled material, these delays aren't just inconvenient; they’re costly. Reclaimed material has to be replaced with new material or stockpiled until conditions improve. This adds time, expense, and logistical challenges. Gyru-Star screening buckets, however, are built for these conditions. Thanks to True Screening® technology and a stainless-steel non-stick floor, they maintain excellent performance in the very environments that cause other screeners to fail. Why Gyru-Star Screening Buckets Perform Better in Wet Conditions True Screening® technology was originally developed to allow Gyru-Star screening buckets to screen without crushing or shredding. But its advantages go much further, particularly when conditions turn wet. There are two key elements behind this performance: the rolling action and the flexible polyurethane stars. The poly-star rotors spin in an upward direction, creating a natural rolling action inside the bucket. Instead of forcing material against a fixed screen, this motion gently agitates and breaks apart clumps of wet soil. As the material tumbles, fines fall through the gaps between the rotors, allowing for a clean, efficient separation. Each rotor is fitted with flexible polyurethane stars, engineered specifically for durability and performance in all conditions. Their flexibility allows them to work through heavy and sticky material without clogging, maintaining consistent throughput even when soil moisture is high. Preventing Material Build-Up and Blockages Even with an effective screening action, consistent flow is essential for high output. Wet material has a tendency to compact inside conventional screening buckets. This reduces efficiency and causes repeated stoppages. To eliminate this problem, every Gyru-Star screening bucket is fitted with a stainless-steel non-stick floor as standard. This feature is unique to the Gyru-Star range. The smooth, low-friction surface prevents material from sticking to the floor of the bucket. This ensures a constant flow into the rotors and keeps the screening process moving. The combination of rolling action, flexible stars, and a non-stick shell allows Gyru-Star screening buckets to continue working long after wet conditions have forced other screeners to stop. How Wet-Weather Screening Improves Productivity Being able to continue screening in the rain or when the ground is saturated has significant project benefits: Recover More Material and Reduce Landfill Costs Wet soil doesn’t need to be stockpiled or discarded. You can screen it immediately, reducing disposal fees and cutting down on imported backfill or topsoil. Faster Turnaround for Recycled Material Since wet material is screened rather than stored, projects stay on schedule, even during periods of heavy rain. Aeration Helps Material Dry Faster The rolling action inside the bucket naturally aerates the soil, speeding up drying times and improving the quality of recycled material. These benefits make Gyru-Star one of the most efficient tools for screening damp material directly on site, even in challenging weather. Real-World Proof: RJT Groundworks These advantages aren’t just theoretical; they translate into meaningful savings on real jobsites. RJT Groundworks Services, for example, reduced their landfill waste by 70% after switching to a Gyru-Star screening bucket. This change saved them up to £1,500 ($2,000) every month. They were able to reuse a far greater volume of material on site, cutting both disposal fees and imported material costs. As landfill tax continues to rise, results like these will only become more impactful. Conclusion: Transform Your Screening Process In conclusion, Gyru-Star screening buckets are designed to excel in wet conditions. Their innovative technology not only enhances productivity but also reduces costs associated with material disposal and procurement. By incorporating these buckets into your operations, you can ensure that your projects remain on track, regardless of the weather. If you’d like to learn more about how Gyru-Star screening buckets perform in all conditions, or if you want to try one for yourself, you can find your local Gyru-Star dealer through our website. Our dealers will be able to provide demonstrations, answer technical questions, and help you choose the right model for your machinery and material. ---wix---
- The Advantages of Using Screening Buckets for Small Volumes of Material
For many contractors, traditional screening equipment can be a significant investment. The costs associated with purchasing, maintaining, and operating dedicated screeners can be overwhelming, especially when dealing with smaller volumes of material. That’s where screening buckets come into play. Compact, efficient, and versatile, they provide a practical and profitable alternative. This makes onsite, low-volume screening accessible to more operators. Why Screen Small Volumes of Material? The benefits of onsite screening remain consistent, regardless of project size. Reclaiming quality materials from waste can significantly reduce your material, waste-disposal, and transport costs. This reduction makes a measurable difference to your bottom line. While the savings per project may appear modest, they accumulate quickly. For small jobs with tight budgets, these efficiencies often determine whether you break even or turn a profit. Why Use a Screening Bucket? Cost-Effective by Design A screening bucket offers many of the same functions as a traditional screening plant but without the hefty price tag. Its lower purchase and running costs make it an ideal choice for small to medium-sized operations. These businesses aim to maximise efficiency without overstretching their budgets. With fewer moving parts and no engine to maintain, servicing is straightforward, and downtime is minimal. Perhaps the biggest advantage is that a screening bucket requires just one machine and one operator. This eliminates the need for additional equipment or labour, streamlining operations. Efficient and Easy to Use Convenience is another key benefit. The bucket can be taken directly to the material, minimising unnecessary transport, fuel use, and double handling. There’s no complex setup involved, and virtually no maintenance downtime. Once the job is complete, the bucket can travel with the carrier on a standard plant trailer. This feature is perfect for contractors working across multiple sites or on smaller, varied projects. Making Low-Volume Screening Cost-Effective For landscaping and building contractors, or anyone working across several smaller sites, a screening bucket is a game changer. It allows you to recover and reuse material directly onsite, even when the space or volume doesn’t justify a traditional screener. Without the overheads of larger plant equipment, screening buckets transform what was once a costly, wasteful process into an efficient, sustainable, and profitable part of everyday operations. Real-World Applications of Screening Buckets Screening buckets are not just theoretical tools; they have practical applications across various industries. For example, in landscaping, contractors can use these buckets to sift through soil, removing debris and creating quality topsoil for future projects. In construction, screening buckets can help separate reusable materials from waste, ensuring that valuable resources are not discarded. This not only saves money but also contributes to a more sustainable approach to construction practices. - Case Study: "We've Reduced Our Landfill Waste by 70%" [Gyru-Star 3-150L]
Thanks to their recent investment in a Gyru-Star screening bucket, RJT Groundworks Services have reduced their landfill waste by almost 70%, in some cases saving up to £1,500 a month. We paid them a visit to find out more about how they’ve been using their bucket and the impact it’s had on their operations. Rich Tayler screening topsoil with his Gyru-Star 3-150L screening bucket The Challenges of Traditional Screening Methods To understand just how significant this impact has been, it’s important to look at the waste and cost challenges RJT Groundworks faced before switching to a Gyru-Star screening bucket. The Devizes-based landscaping and groundworks contractor produces around three truckloads of muck-away waste each week, which are transported back to their yard for processing and disposal. This waste, generated from a variety of landscaping, groundworks and fencing projects across Wiltshire and the surrounding area, consists mostly of hardcore and soil. Previously, almost all the waste the company generated would be sent to landfill at a cost of £350–£450 per load. These costs quickly mounted, especially in the busier months. This led Managing Director Rich Tayler to look for an alternative solution — one that would recover usable materials and bring waste disposal costs under control. Initially, the team began using a static vibratory screen. While this worked well with dry soil and aggregate, it was inefficient in wet conditions and couldn’t produce the product they needed. As a result, large amounts of quality topsoil and hardcore were still being lost to landfill. Recognising that these challenges required a new approach, Rich began searching for a solution that could both recover material and control costs. Screening muck away waste to produce high-quality topsoil Finding the Right Tool for the Job Rich’s local Gyru-Star dealer, Reeds Construction and Engineering , was his first port of call. A Gyru-Star dealer since 2017, Reeds were able to provide expert advice and guidance on choosing the right screening solution for his application. As Rich’s team were already using a JCB Agri telehandler, the Gyru-Star 3-150L was the obvious choice, keeping investment and running costs down by allowing them to utilise the existing carrier. Reeds also supplied the bucket with a Kustom Konnect Universal Rail System , which would allow the bucket to be quickly adapted to another loader should the company ever upgrade their machinery. There were several advantages to this three-rotor screening bucket which made it ideal for the application at hand. Firstly, the bucket’s flexible polyurethane stars (poly-stars) would enable Rich to screen almost any material without crushing or shredding, completely separating fines and oversize to produce a high-quality screened product. Secondly, this same technology, coupled with the bucket’s non-stick stainless-steel floor, ensured it remained effective in wet conditions, allowing Rich to screen material as soon as it arrived at his yard, without having to wait for it to dry out. Lastly, as the poly-stars in the 3-150L rotate, they create a rolling action inside the bucket. This gently breaks apart clumps of wet material and removes soil from roots and turf, recovering far more material. With the right equipment finally in place, the results soon became evident, transforming both waste management and day-to-day operations at RJT Groundworks. Proven Results in All Conditions Nearly a year on, the 3-150L has more than proven its worth. RJT Groundworks have reduced their landfill waste by almost 70% . During the company’s busiest periods, this can save up to £1,500 a month . That’s not including the additional savings from replacing new topsoil (costing £45 per tonne) with reclaimed material. In this time, Rich has screened well over a thousand tonnes without seeing any significant wear on the poly-stars, and the bucket continues to deliver consistent results. He’s found that a steady, measured approach works best, lightly loading the bucket to let the poly-stars do their job. “To get the most from the bucket, you’ve got to know how to use it. If you overfill it, you’ll get less material out of it,” he explained. The poly-stars after screening over 1000 tonnes Beyond waste recovery, the screening bucket has proven to be a valuable tool onsite. Rich and his team now use it to spread topsoil ready for turfing or seeding, with the rolling action of the poly-stars producing a fine, even layer of soil. It also speeds up what is typically a labour-intensive and time-consuming process. Overall, the biggest advantage of the 3-150L has been its performance in damp conditions. Now, most of the muck-away waste they produce can be screened straight away, resulting in a faster turnaround time and a more streamlined recycling process. This is especially useful during the wetter winter months, when it could be weeks before the material is dry enough to process with a vibratory screen. Reflecting on his experience so far, Rich has no hesitation in recommending the bucket to others in the industry. He summed it up simply: “I wish I’d bought one sooner.” Screening crushed concrete to recover hardcore Interested in Learning More? - Circular Construction: How Onsite Screening Can Turn Waste into Resources
Gyru-Star 4-100HE screening bucket processing demolition waste on a construction site In 2020, the world generated 2.24 billion tonnes of solid waste , with construction and demolition (C&D) activities responsible for almost a third, some 672 million tonnes of rubble, soil, and debris, much of it still containing valuable resources. That same year, the UK alone produced 59.4 million tonnes of non-hazardous C&D waste , accounting for 31% of the country’s total waste. It’s little wonder, then, that the traditional 'dig and dump' method is giving way to a more circular approach. Increasingly, specifiers, contractors, and local authorities are recognising the value of keeping resources in use and diverting material away from landfill. The good news? In 2020, the UK recovered 93% of its C&D waste, preventing 55 million tonnes from going to landfill. But with millions of tonnes still buried each year, the industry faces growing pressure to push recovery rates even higher. One of the most practical tools for doing so is onsite screening, a process that allows contractors to transform mixed or low-grade soils and aggregates into clean, reusable products right where they’re generated. The Importance of Onsite Screening The benefits of onsite screening and a circular approach extend beyond just environmental gains. There can also be significant financial and operational advantages. This is exactly what Wiltshire-based contractor, RJT Groundworks Services , found after they began using a Gyru-Star screening bucket to process their ‘muck away’ waste. By using the screening bucket to process this waste, they were able to recover a much larger amount of usable material, mostly topsoil and hardcore. Managing Director, Rich Tayler, estimates that this approach has cut their waste disposal costs by more than half, saving them £1,500 a month. That’s an £18,000-a-year saving just by redirecting waste away from landfill, without even taking into consideration any further savings on material and transport costs. It’s also a simple way for contractors to improve their environmental credibility, which can be especially important when bidding for new contracts or navigating changing regulations. RJT Groundworks Services using a Gyru-Star 3-150L screening bucket to process 'muck away' waste Stakeholders and end users benefit too. The cost savings achieved through material reuse can be passed on, while the improved sustainability credentials of a project enhance its public and regulatory profile. Less site traffic and fewer heavy deliveries mean reduced disruption to the surrounding area. Successfully Implementing Onsite Screening So, what does successful implementation of onsite screening look like? How can this approach be applied to smaller projects without the budget or infrastructure to support large screening plant? Onsite screening is nothing new, but due to the cost of hiring and operating large screening plants, it’s not always viable on smaller projects, especially if there is not a large volume of material that can be screened. Another common challenge is site access. In remote or rural areas, it’s not always possible to get a screening plant to site, or to transport material between the work area and the screening plant. As a result, many contractors, such as Rich Tayler, have turned to screening buckets as an efficient yet affordable alternative. Screening buckets make use of the machinery already onsite, keeping costs low and efficiency high. They are compact, quiet, and versatile enough to access tight jobsites and work effectively in wet or dry material. With no need for extra operators, additional fuel, or costly maintenance, they provide a practical, low-impact alternative to large screening plants, particularly on smaller or more confined projects. Case Study: How Onsite Screening Has Supported Sweden’s Circular Approach to Energy Infrastructure The Swedish national electrical grid is one of the best examples of how onsite screening supports a circular economy, and the value that a screening bucket can offer. According to Svensk Energi , Sweden has about 329,500 km (204,742 miles) of underground power cables across its local and high-voltage networks. Regulations require every metre of these cables to be padded with a <8 mm material, typically sand, in order to protect against stones and other debris. However, Sweden’s geology consists mainly of crystalline and metamorphic rocks, such as granite, marble, and sandstone, meaning sand is in short supply. As sand is also essential to the country’s fresh water supply, local authorities have implemented a tax on the material, and new permits for extracting sand are not available. As a result, sand is a very expensive resource, driving up the cost of installing underground utilities. This is why many forward-thinking contractors have turned to onsite screening as an alternative to the traditional ‘dug and dump’ approach. Using screening buckets, operators are able to recycle trench arisings into high-quality padding material, which can be used in place of sand. Gyru-Star screening bucket creating padding material for a utilities project in Sweden Screening buckets were the natural choice for this application, as they enable operators to screen material directly into the trench, streamlining the backfilling process. They can also be used on sites in remote areas, which are inaccessible to traditional screening plants or trucks and HGVs. The result has been significant cost savings, both in materials and operationally. In one case, a machine operator reported a payback time of only seven hours for their screening bucket, just in material costs alone. Gyru-Star screening buckets , in particular, have been one of the most popular choices for the utilities industry. Unlike most screening buckets, Gyru-Star uses flexible polyurethane stars, which screen almost any material without crushing or shredding. This means that oversize material, such as stones, is completely removed from the padding material, rather than being crushed and mixed in. These buckets have been so successful that their use is now considered best practice by E.ON (one of the country’s largest energy companies) and Svenska kraftnät , the Swedish national grid. Closing the Loop Onsite screening isn’t just a way to handle waste; it’s a method of creating value from materials that might otherwise be discarded. For contractors, it’s an opportunity to cut costs, reduce environmental impact, and meet the growing demand for sustainable practices. If screening becomes standard practice on projects of all sizes, the industry can keep more materials in circulation, reduce reliance on virgin resources, and move closer to a genuinely circular economy. The tools exist. The results are proven. Now it’s about making them part of everyday construction.

Gyru-Star 4-150MAX with Engcon Tiltrotator Optimising your processes is a vital step in improving onsite efficiency, ensuring projects are delivered on time and costs are kept to a minimum. An important aspect of this is ensuring that you have the right attachments, which are optimised for your carrier. This is why each of the thirty-one models in the Gyru-Star range has been designed for a specific carrier weight range, allowing the hydraulic system to be optimised for the flow rate of compatible carriers. Not only does this ensure that both the screening bucket and carrier operate at optimum efficiency, but it also provides two unique benefits for compatibility. Simplified Setup with No Drain Line Required Gyru-Star screening buckets are designed to run on the carrier’s auxiliary circuit or hammer line, and don’t require a drain line. This simplifies the hydraulic setup, allowing you to get up and running faster, and ensuring compatibility with a wider range of carriers. This makes them especially valuable for hire fleets and operators with varied equipment, as the buckets can be moved between carriers without requiring modifications to the hydraulic setup, saving both time and money. Tiltrotator-Ready as Standard As tiltrotators continue to grow in popularity, the need for tiltrotator-compatible attachments has never been greater. Many attachments, however, are not designed to cope with the lower flow rates and higher backpressures associated with these systems. Gyru-Star screening buckets are different. Their hydraulic systems are designed to perform reliably under these conditions, allowing them to be used with any compatible tiltrotator without any modifications. Ready to Get More from Your Machines? Whether you're looking to increase productivity, reduce downtime, or streamline your operations with greater hydraulic compatibility, Gyru-Star screening buckets offer a smart, efficient solution. With models to suit every 1–30 tonne carrier and built-in tiltrotator compatibility as standard, there’s a Gyru-Star for every job. - Headplates and Interfaces for Gyru-Star Screening Buckets
The interface between attachment and carrier is critical and not something that should ever be an afterthought. That’s why every Gyru-Star screening bucket is available with a custom-made headplate or interface from our sister brand, Kustom Konnect . Specialists in headplates and couplers for all types of carriers, Kustom Konnect products are designed and manufactured in Great Britain to meet the highest standards. Whether you're working with a standard machine or require a completely bespoke interface, our turnkey manufacturing setup enables us to deliver solutions tailored to your needs, ensuring your equipment is ready to go the moment it arrives. Excavator Interfaces Standard Headplates Standard welded and sliding pin headplates are available for all of our excavator-compatible screening buckets. Standard headplate types, such as S40 and S60, are often available as off-the-shelf products, though most headplates are built to order. Interchangeable Pin Headplates Interchangeable pin headplates are an increasingly popular option for rental fleets or operators who want to use their Gyru-Star screening bucket on multiple carriers. As the name suggests, these headplates use interchangeable pins, which allow the pin centre to be changed. Open-S Automatic Quick Couplers Gyru-Star screening buckets will soon be available with purpose-built automatic quick couplers, compliant with the Open-S standard. This will enable seamless compatibility between Gyru-Star screening buckets and any tiltrotator or carrier using the Open-S standard. Gyru-Star’s parent company, Wheatway Solutions , is a member of the Open-S Alliance . Loader Interfaces Standard Loader Interfaces There are several loader-compatible screening buckets in the Gyru-Star range, covering all types of loaders from 1–15 tonnes. These models can be supplied with interfaces to suit any compact loader, telehandler, tractor or backhoe loader. Universal Rail System The Kustom Konnect Universal Rail System (KKRS) is an innovative design that allows Gyru-Star screening buckets to be used with a wide range of loaders. It also allows the screening bucket to be swapped between loaders that use different width interfaces. Interchangeable pads mount to rails on the back of the bucket, allowing the interface to be quickly adapted to almost any make or model of loader. Skid Steer Interfaces The Gyru-Star SL series are the only poly-star screening buckets on the market purpose-built for skid steer and compact track loaders. A skid steer interface is included as standard with all SL models, making these buckets truly a ‘plug-and-play’ system. These interfaces are also available to purchase separately. Dual Excavator–Loader Interfaces Kustom Konnect Dual Interfaces provide unrivalled versatility for Gyru-Star screening buckets, allowing one bucket to be quickly swapped between excavators and loaders. This solution is ideal for situations where a single bucket may be used for multiple applications, or for contractors who want the option to use the bucket with different carriers. Ordering a Kustom Konnect Excavator Headplate or Loader Interface By integrating Kustom Konnect headplates and interfaces, Gyru‑Star screening buckets become truly adaptable tools. Whether you’re switching between carriers or expanding your fleet’s compatibility, every interface is precision-engineered in Great Britain to deliver a seamless, safe, and efficient solution for all your screening needs. Just ask your local Gyru‑Star dealer about a Kustom Konnect headplate or interface when placing your bucket order. If you already own a Gyru‑Star bucket (or any other attachment), contact Wheatway Solutions or your dealer directly to discuss your options and choose the best fit for your machinery.
