Costs escalated quickly during busy periods, prompting Managing Director Rich Tayler to seek an alternative approach that would enable more effective material recovery and reduce disposal costs. The company initially tried a static vibratory screen, which worked well when soil was dry but performed poorly with damp material. As a result, much of the usable topsoil and hardcore still ended up in landfill. Recognising the need for a more versatile solution, Rich contacted his local Gyru-Star dealer, Reeds Construction and Engineering . Finding the Right Tool As the company already operated a JCB Agri telehandler, the Gyru-Star 3-150L provided the ideal fit. The bucket offered low running costs, compatibility with existing machinery and flexibility thanks to the Kustom Konnect Universal Rail System supplied by Reeds. The three-rotor design and flexible poly-stars enabled Rich to separate fines and oversize without crushing or shredding, even with wet or root-bound material. The stainless steel non-stick floor ensured consistent performance in damp conditions, allowing Rich to screen material as soon as it arrived. Landfill waste is down by almost 70 percent, and monthly savings during peak periods can reach £1,500 (£2,000). Additional savings come from replacing purchased topsoil, typically £45 ($61) per tonne, with reclaimed material. More than a thousand tonnes have been screened without significant wear to the poly-stars. Rich has found that a steady, lighter loading technique delivers the best results, as it allows the stars to begin their rolling action much more quickly. Although each individual bucket load may contain slightly less material, the faster rolling action dramatically improves the overall cycle time, making the entire process quicker and more consistent. The bucket has also become a valuable on-site tool for spreading topsoil before turfing or seeding. The rolling action of the stars produces a fine, even layer and significantly reduces manual labour. Its strongest advantage remains performance in damp conditions. Material that used to sit for weeks while drying can now be processed immediately, which speeds up recycling and frees up vital yard space.   • Case Study: Screening for Success with the Gyru-Star 3-100MAX

    Patryk's 6 Ton Kubota with one of his Gyru-Star screening buckets In August 2013, MTT Sweden AB took delivery of their first Gyru-Star screening buckets. Patryk Haglund was one of the first contractors in Scandinavia to purchase a Gyru-Star ‘sorteringskopor’ from them, and he has had one on almost every job since. Since then, he has had several Gyru-Star screening buckets for his 6-ton Kubota excavator, but for the past 5 years, he has predominantly been using a 3-100MAX. Whilst many customers purchase their Gyru-Star attachments for a specific application, Patryk has found an almost endless list of uses for his, from spreading soil for seeding grass to gritting icy roads in the bitter Swedish winters. As a general contractor, Patryk works on a wide variety of projects including new build housing developments, landscaping, drainage and even some forestry work. Regardless of the project, he says he always has a Gyru-Star screening bucket with him. "The bucket makes everything easier. You can take it everywhere; I’m always finding new uses for it"  When we caught up with Patryk recently, he explained how his screening buckets have allowed him to finish projects ahead of schedule and save both himself and his customers money. One of the major advantages he identified, was that he could recycle construction waste for use elsewhere on the site. Not only did this reduce the project's overall costs, but he could avoid downtime whilst waiting for material deliveries in rural areas. However, this isn’t all he has used his screening bucket for. Here are just a few of the applications Patryk has found for his Gyru-Star screening buckets: Gritting icy roads in the winter.  Removing screws, nails and other metalwork from burn pit ash.  Cleaning up old roof thatching.  Spreading soil ready for grass seed.  Removing soil from roots and tree stumps, so it could be used to fill in the hole.  Cleaning up construction waste and separating the useable materials from the scrap, including removing large pieces of polystyrene, without making a mess.  Removing fines from demolition waste.  Turning excavated material from pool constructions into topsoil for use around the pool area.  Separating kitchen tiles from a pile of demolition waste, without shattering them.  Backfilling cable and pipe trenches.  Patryk also spoke very highly of Gyru-Star’s Scandinavian dealer, MTT Sweden AB.
