Gyru-Star 3-120HE screening bucket on an Avant compact loader Landscaping projects often involve handling soil, turf, compost and mixed organic material, yet the scale of these jobs rarely justifies the cost or complexity of a full-size screening plant. For many contractors, the challenge is finding a practical way to process material on site without increasing project costs or adding unnecessary machinery. Screening buckets provide a simple and affordable solution. By attaching directly to excavators, loaders or skid steers, they allow operators to screen and reuse material using the machines already working on the project. Polyurethane star screening buckets also offer an important advantage over steel rotor screening buckets. The flexible poly-stars are significantly lighter than steel rotors, allowing for a larger screening area without adding excessive weight. This makes them particularly well suited to smaller carriers such as mini diggers and small-frame skid steers. The result is a lightweight, versatile attachment that gives landscaping contractors access to professional screening capability without the cost or complexity of a tracked or truck-mounted screener. Why Polyurethane Stars Outperform Steel Rotors Gyru-Star 3-120SL screening topsoil Landscaping contractors face a range of everyday challenges, from rising waste disposal costs to restricted site access and unpredictable ground conditions. Polyurethane star screening buckets help address many of these issues by allowing material to be processed and reused directly on site. Reducing Waste Disposal and Haulage Costs Waste disposal has become increasingly expensive in recent years. Rising landfill taxes have significantly increased the cost of sending soil and organic waste to landfill, placing pressure on landscaping contractors to find more cost-effective alternatives. Haulage costs further increase the expense of removing waste material from site. Transporting soil, turf and mixed spoil requires additional machine time, fuel and labour. In many cases, contractors must also purchase replacement materials such as topsoil or compost to complete the project. Screening buckets help reduce these costs by allowing contractors to recover valuable material that would otherwise be treated as waste. By removing rocks, roots and other oversize debris, operators can produce reusable soil directly on site. This reduces both disposal costs and the need to import new material. Improving Performance in Damp or Wet Conditions Landscaping professionals rarely find that the weather is on their side. Wet conditions can quickly bring screening operations to a halt as traditional screeners become clogged with wet soils. This is particularly a problem in the autumn and winter, as it can take weeks for material to dry out. Polyurethane star screening buckets are well suited to these conditions. The flexible stars rotate to create a rolling motion that gently breaks apart clumps of damp material while allowing fines to fall through the gaps. All without crushing or shredding. This process helps operators recover more usable soil and produce a cleaner finished product. More importantly, it allows work to continue even when conditions are far from ideal. For contractors operating to tight project schedules, this ability to keep working in wet conditions is a significant advantage. Working Efficiently on Restricted-Access Sites Many landscaping projects take place in environments where access is limited. Residential gardens, public parks and urban developments often restrict the size of machinery that can be used. Screening buckets are compatible with compact carriers, including machines as small as one tonne. This allows contractors to screen material directly on site in locations where larger screening equipment simply cannot operate. Logistics are also simpler with a screening bucket, as it can be transported with the carrier like any other compact attachment. This avoids the need for additional vehicles or trailers and makes it easier to move equipment between sites. Lower Running and Maintenance Costs Operating a standalone screening plant can significantly increase your operating costs. Fuel consumption, maintenance requirements and sometimes even additional operators all increase running costs. Screening buckets offer a far simpler alternative. Because they run on the carrier’s auxiliary circuit, they do not require a separate engine or dedicated power source. Maintenance requirements are also minimal compared with many conventional screening systems. Fewer moving parts and a simpler design mean less downtime and lower servicing costs. More Than Just Screening: Multi-Purpose Functionality One of the most valuable characteristics of a polyurethane star screening bucket is its versatility. While screening is its primary function, the design of the rotating stars offers additional capabilities. The rolling action created by the stars naturally blends materials during the screening process. This makes the bucket useful for mixing soil and compost, ready for seed beds, lawns or planters. At the same time, the rolling action also introduces air into the mixture. This aeration can improve the structure of compost and soil blends, helping to create a healthier growing medium. Landscaping contractors also frequently use screening buckets for soil spreading. The rotating stars help break up clumps and distribute material evenly across the surface, producing a fine layer that is ideal for turfing or seeding. By combining screening, blending and spreading in a single attachment, contractors can combine multiple processes into a single operation, improving efficiency across the entire project. Case Study: How RJT Groundworks Cut Costs by 70% Rich Tayler screening muckaway with his Gyru-Star 3-150L screening bucket The practical benefits of screening buckets can be clearly seen in the experience of RJT Groundworks Services, a landscaping and groundworks contractor based in Wiltshire. The company generates several truckloads of soil and hardcore each week from landscaping and fencing projects. Previously, most of this material was sent to landfill at a cost of around £350 to £450 per load. Looking for a more cost-effective solution, Managing Director Rich Tayler invested in a Gyru-Star screening bucket . The bucket allowed his team to process the material on site, separating reusable soil from rocks, roots and other debris. The impact was immediate. By screening their waste material instead of sending it to landfill, RJT Groundworks reduced landfill disposal by almost 70 per cent. During busy periods, this can save the company up to £1,500 per month in disposal costs alone. The recovered soil can now be reused on landscaping projects, reducing the need to purchase new topsoil while improving overall efficiency across the business. For an in-depth look at how Rich utilised his Gyru-Star screening bucket and the resulting cost savings, you can read the full case study here . Key Takeaways for Landscaping Contractors For landscaping contractors, polyurethane star screening buckets offer a practical way to improve efficiency and reduce project costs. They provide an affordable alternative to traditional screening plant while remaining light enough to operate on compact machinery. By allowing contractors to screen material on site, they help reduce landfill disposal, minimise haulage costs and recover valuable soil that can be reused on the same project. Their ability to perform in damp conditions ensures work can continue throughout the year, while compatibility with small carriers allows them to operate in locations larger screening equipment cannot reach. With the added benefits of low operating costs and multi-purpose functionality, screening buckets have become an increasingly valuable tool for modern landscaping contractors. - Industry Focus: Solar Installation
The global transition towards renewable energy has accelerated the construction of solar farms across Europe, North America and beyond. As governments and energy providers invest in green infrastructure, vast solar arrays are being installed at an unprecedented rate. However, solar panels are only part of the equation. Every solar farm requires an extensive network of underground high-voltage cables, both within the site itself and connecting the installation to the wider electricity grid. This means many kilometres of trench must be excavated, laid and protected. Gyru-Star 4-150MAX creating padding material for underground cables in Sweden. The Challenges of Cable Protection Protecting high-voltage cables requires suitable padding material to protect them from damage. Traditionally, this has meant importing sand or other certified backfill material. With the cost of sand increasing and availability limited in some regions, the expense of protecting underground services can escalate quickly. On large solar installations, material and haulage costs soon become a significant part of the overall project budget. Logistics add another challenge. Solar farms are often located on agricultural land or remote sites where access is restricted. Narrow tracks, soft ground conditions and environmental limitations can make it difficult to transport large screening plant or additional machinery. For contractors working in these conditions, a more practical approach is needed. Recycling Trench Arisings To control material costs, many contractors are now recycling the material already available on site. Trench arisings can be processed and reused as cable padding material, reducing both material purchases and waste disposal costs while simplifying site logistics. Before this material can be reused, it must first be screened. In most utility applications, this means removing particles larger than 8 to 10 mm to produce a suitable protective layer around the cable. Why Screening Buckets? Gyru-Star 4-150MAX creating padding material for underground cables. While several screening options are available, screening buckets offer a practical combination of mobility and efficiency for this type of work. These attachments turn any excavator, loader or skid steer into a powerful mobile screener and address several of the key challenges contractors face on modern jobsites. A Cost-Effective Solution Screening buckets require a much smaller capital investment than traditional mobile or static screeners, and running costs are also significantly lower. Beyond the initial purchase price, contractors benefit from reduced fuel consumption, minimal maintenance requirements and the ability to utilise existing machinery already on the job. Screening buckets can also help to cut haulage expenses. With no need to transport spoil to an external screening plant or bring replacement material back to site, contractors can reduce vehicle movements, fuel use and time lost to logistics. For large utility or solar installations, these savings compound quickly, making screening buckets one of the most financially efficient solutions available. Access Any Jobsite Solar farms and utility corridors are frequently located in remote areas or on agricultural land where access is limited. Screening buckets can operate in confined or difficult terrain that is inaccessible to screening plant or larger machinery. Utilise Existing Machinery Because screening buckets are compatible with excavators, loaders and skid steers already working on the project, contractors avoid bringing additional equipment onto site. This keeps the jobsite lean, reduces fuel consumption and streamlines operations. This is especially useful for small teams. Screen Directly into the Trench Unlike static or off-site screening options, screening buckets allow operators to process material exactly where it’s needed. Fines can be placed directly into the trench over the cables, speeding up backfilling and ensuring the material is applied evenly for consistent protection. Poly-Star vs Steel Rotor Screening Buckets There are two types of screening bucket that are commonly used for producing padding material. These are steel rotor buckets and polyurethane star screening buckets . Whilst both operate on a similar principle, they produce two very different products. Traditional steel rotor screening buckets tend to crush and shred material during processing. While this may reduce particle size, it also mixes rocks, roots and debris into the soil, compromising the quality of the finished product. For cable padding, this presents a problem. Protective backfill must be clean and consistent. Crushing oversize material does not remove the contamination; it simply breaks it into smaller pieces. In some cases, the sharp edges created by crushed rock may also increase the risk of cable damage. Polyurethane star screening buckets operate differently. The flexible stars rotate to create a rolling motion that gently separates fines from oversize material. Rocks, roots and debris are removed intact, leaving a clean and consistent padding material suitable for protecting underground services. Example of the two products produced by a polyurethane star screening bucket. Left image shows >15mm oversize and the right image shows <15mm screening soil. As you can see in the image above, this non-destructive process produces two clearly separated outputs: a fine material suitable for cable protection and oversize. A Proven Approach in Sweden Whilst poly-star screening buckets are now widely used on solar and utility projects around the world, Swedish contractors were among the earliest adopters of the technology. One example is Lars Olsson of Östervärn Gräv AB. Lars and his Huddig 1260D backhoe were contracted by E.ON to install high-voltage underground cables as part of a major upgrade to the regional electrical grid. Gyru-Star 3-120MAX screening bucket on a utility project in Sweden. Swedish regulations require all cable padding material to be under 8 mm, and with suitable sand becoming both scarce and increasingly expensive, Lars quickly recognised that his screening bucket could offer a more efficient solution. Having used Gyru-Star screening buckets on previous projects, he understood how the attachment could reduce material costs and simplify installation. “At the start of the project, I had to get approval from E.ON to use the screening bucket,” he explained. “However, it was not difficult to get E.ON to understand the benefits, and it didn’t take long to get approval.” By recycling trench arisings directly on site, Lars was able to produce a consistent sub-8 mm padding material without transporting spoil to an external screening plant or importing new backfill. The ability to screen directly into the trench also improved productivity and ensured the protective layer was evenly distributed across the cables. This approach reduced material and machinery movements, lowered operational costs and significantly reduced the environmental impact of the project. It also allowed Lars to work more independently on site, which was particularly valuable when operating with a small team in remote locations. Built for Utility Contractors Following feedback from utility contractors, Gyru-Star developed a range of dedicated padding buckets known as the MAX Series . These models feature an extended cutting edge, which makes it easier to work with the smaller stockpiles common on these projects. Ultra-Low Maintenance Whilst most screening buckets are chain-driven, Gyru-Star buckets use self-tensioning carbon belt drives . These require no lubrication or adjustment, and sealed bearings are also used throughout. This means almost zero maintenance. Reduced Risk of Contamination The carbon belt driveline and sealed bearings also reduce the risk of hydrocarbon contamination. To further reduce this risk, all hydraulic components are housed in a sealed cavity within the shell to protect against accidental damage. Wide Carrier Compatibility Gyru-Star offers the largest range of screening buckets on the market, with 31 models across 6 series . Each model is optimised for a specific carrier weight range. This provides a dedicated screening solution for excavators from 1 to 30 tonnes, loaders from 1 to 15 tonnes and skid steers from 1 to 9 tonnes. Gyru-Star screening buckets are also compatible with all makes and models of tiltrotator , as the hydraulic system is designed to handle high back pressures and low flow rates. The system also does not require a case drain and can run on just a hammer circuit. Looking Ahead As solar installations continue to expand worldwide, the demand for underground cabling will only increase. Managing costs, reducing waste and improving efficiency will remain key priorities for contractors and utility providers. Recycling trench arisings into cable padding material provides a practical solution. Polyurethane star screening buckets combine mobility, non-destructive screening and low operating costs. This allows contractors to reduce reliance on imported materials while producing a consistent and reliable protective backfill. - Industry Focus: Topsoil and Compost Production
For compost producers and topsoil suppliers, screening is a critical final step. Whether removing oversized material, improving consistency or increasing product value, effective screening directly impacts profitability. The Challenge: Rising Costs and Wet Conditions Compost production often operates on tight margins. Investing in a standalone trommel or screening plant represents a significant capital outlay, alongside ongoing costs for transport, fuel, storage space and maintenance. For many farms, landscaping businesses and smaller-scale producers, that level of investment can be difficult to justify. Wet material presents a second challenge. Compost retains moisture, particularly in colder months or during periods of rainfall. Conventional trommel and mesh screens frequently clog under these conditions, reducing output or forcing operators to delay processing altogether. Poly-star screening buckets address both issues simultaneously. By mounting directly onto carriers already on site, they eliminate the need for additional machinery or dedicated screening plant. More importantly, these buckets continue to work effectively in damp conditions, thanks to the rolling action created by the poly-stars. This gently breaks apart clumps of wet material, rather than allowing them to block the screening media. The result is consistent throughput and improved material quality, even when conditions are far from ideal. Purple Mountain Organics – Maryland, United States Nazirahk Amen testing out the Gyru-Star 3-150SL during the onsite demonstration with Ransome Attachments Purple Mountain Organics , in Maryland, is an organic farm focused on supporting local food sustainability through regenerative practices. A core part of its sustainable farming practices is producing its own compost from food waste, woodchip, leaves and other farm compostables. After 18 months of composting, the material has to be screened to remove any particles above ½”, as these will rob plants of essential nitrogen. While Purple Mountain’s owner, Nazirahk Amen, had explored a number of trommel and agitator sieve screens, nothing was able to handle wet materials efficiently. This meant they were unable to use the material they had stockpiled. This is why, in early 2025, they approached New Jersey-based Ransome Attachments , their local Gyru-Star dealer. Owner Eric Ransome soon arranged an on-site demonstration to allow Nazirahk to test a screening bucket for himself. As the farm already operated a Takeuchi medium-frame skid steer, the Gyru-Star 3-150SL was the ideal choice. For this application, the bucket was fitted with a 10 mm fragment kit. During the demonstration, Eric reported that they were able to screen 10–15 yds/hour of the wet compost, and he estimated that 15–20 yds/hour would be easily achievable as the material dried out in warmer weather. Thanks to the Gyru-Star screening bucket, Purple Mountain Organics was finally able to start using the compost it had been producing for the previous two years. Shuler’s Mulch and Grading – North Carolina, United States Tony Shuler operating his Gyru-Star 4-100HE screening bucket Much like Purple Mountain Organics, Shuler’s Mulch and Grading struggled to process wet materials, in this case topsoil, with traditional screening equipment. Company owner Tony Shuler bought his Gyru-Star 4-100HE screening bucket from Ransome Attachments before the first shipment had even arrived in the United States. Although initially sceptical of the polyurethane stars, it took only 30 minutes of screening for Tony to realise that the bucket outperformed his $80,000 truck-mounted screening plant. “I’ve got an $80,000 screen plant,” Tony says. “If I’d have had this (Gyru-Star), I would have never bought that.” The ability to screen without crushing or shredding was also a major advantage for Tony, as it allowed him to produce a much higher-quality product. “This (polyurethane) works better than the metal because the buckets I’ve looked at with metal crush too,” he says. “I didn’t want to crush; I just wanted to separate my limbs, sticks and root mat from the dirt. This is also cheaper than doing it with those other buckets.” For Tony, the combination of lower operating costs, wet-weather capability and improved product quality made the decision clear. Halmstad Cemeteries – Sweden Halmstad Cemetery's Komatsu wheel loader fitted with a Gyru-Star 4-150MAX screening bucket In Halmstad, local cemeteries use a Gyru-Star 4-150MAX to produce high-quality compost and topsoil across multiple sites. Previously, compost production had been outsourced to a contractor using a harp system, which was quickly becoming costly. By bringing screening in-house, the cemetery administration reduced long-term costs while also improving product quality. “In the past, we have hired a local contractor who went over our compost with a harp, but it became quite expensive, and we saw that we could do the job ourselves with better results and, in the long run, at a lower cost,” says Lars Malmberg from the cemetery administration. Mounted to a Komatsu compact wheel loader, the bucket is used across five cemetery locations. In addition to compost processing, it has been used to recycle sand, gravel and construction waste from local church grounds. “If we’re going to dig up a lawn somewhere, we can process the material on-site. We don’t need to move it backwards and forwards to a screening plant,” Lars added. “It’s a massive environmental benefit.” Processing material on site has removed the need to transport it back and forth to a screening plant, reducing handling and environmental impact. What began as a solution for compost screening has become a versatile tool integrated into daily operations. The Halmstad Cemetery administration purchased their Gyru-Star 4-150MAX screening bucket from MTT Sweden AB . Why Gyru-Star? Across these three case studies, the pattern is clear. Gyru-Star screening buckets offer reliable performance in all conditions, lower capital and operating costs, and in many cases produce a higher-quality product. But with a number of manufacturers to choose from, why did these three operators choose Gyru-Star? What sets this brand apart from the competition? True Screening® Gyru-Star screening buckets can screen almost any material without crushing or shredding, producing two clean products: a process called True Screening® . This makes them ideal for removing rocks, roots and other debris from compost, as the result is a much higher-quality product. Built for Wet Material A stainless steel non-stick floor prevents material building up inside the bucket, maintaining a consistent feed into the rotors. The rolling action of the polyurethane stars keeps compost moving, even when damp. Low Maintenance by Design The carbon belt driveline is self-tensioning and requires no lubrication. Combined with sealed bearings throughout, this minimises maintenance requirements and reduces the risk of hydrocarbon contamination in sensitive environments. Strength Without Excess Weight The multi-layer monocoque shell increases durability while reducing the overall weight. This allows for a larger screening area on the same size bucket compared to competitors. Optimised for Efficiency With 31 models across six series, the Gyru-Star range covers: 1–30 tonne excavators 1–15 tonne loaders (including tractors, telehandlers and compact loaders) 1–9 tonne skid steers Each model is engineered for its specific weight class, ensuring maximum efficiency and allowing operators to utilise the machinery that’s already on site. Screening, Blending and Aerating in One Pass The rolling poly-star action not only separates material but also simultaneously blends and aerates it. Combining these functions into a single operation improves workflow efficiency and reduces overall handling time. 14-Finger Stars for Compost At PlantWorx 2025, Gyru-Star introduced a new 14-finger screening star for the 10 mm fragment kit. The additional fingers increase contact with the material during screening, helping prevent long, thin particles and lightweight contaminants such as plastic or paper from slipping through the rotors. The design was developed in direct response to feedback from compost producers looking for cleaner, more consistent screening results. ________________________________________ Across diverse operations and climates, the conclusion remains the same: when cost, flexibility and wet-weather performance matter, Gyru-Star screening buckets provide a practical and proven solution for compost screening. - Poly-Star Screening Buckets: A Smarter Solution for Waste Management
Waste management operations are under continuous pressure to process material efficiently, recover value and reduce disposal costs. Poly-star screening buckets have become an increasingly popular solution because they offer a flexible and practical way to screen material without relying on large static plant. These attachments are commonly used in two key environments: waste transfer stations and on-site screening applications. At transfer stations, they provide a compact and controlled method for pre-processing material before it moves further along the recycling chain. On site, they allow contractors to screen and reuse material at the point of generation, which reduces haulage requirements and shortens turnaround times. There are several reasons why operators choose poly-star screening buckets instead of traditional screening equipment. Many facilities do not have the space to accommodate larger tracked or static screening plant, particularly in confined yards or urban locations. Wet material is another widespread challenge, as many conventional screeners perform poorly when handling damp material. Poly-star buckets continue to operate effectively where other screeners may clog or stall. These buckets are also well suited to non-destructive screening tasks that require material separation without crushing or shredding. This makes them ideal for handling mixed waste streams and recovering usable product without increasing contamination. An Introduction to Polyurethane Star Screening Buckets Most machine operators will be familiar with traditional steel shaft screening buckets, which have been widely used for decades. Polyurethane, or poly-star, screening buckets are a more recent development, although the underlying operating principle remains similar. What sets poly-star screening buckets apart is their ability to screen material without crushing or shredding it . This characteristic makes them particularly valuable in waste management applications. Instead of steel hammers, poly-star screening buckets use flexible polyurethane stars. These stars rotate in an upward direction to create a rolling action inside the bucket, allowing fines to fall through the gaps between the stars. The flexible nature of the stars enables them to break apart clumps of wet material without causing damage. The process is a genuine non-destructive screening method. Performance Advantages Poly-star screening buckets offer two major performance advantages compared with traditional screening plant. These advantages relate to the ability to screen both wet materials and those more sensitive to damage. Because these attachments separate material without crushing or shredding, they are ideal for applications where material integrity must be preserved. A good example is plastic and polystyrene found within mixed aggregate or soil. Poly-star buckets can separate these materials cleanly, which helps to limit contamination. They also excel in wet conditions. The flexible stars can break apart clumps of wet material that would typically clog vibrating or mesh screeners. Although throughput can be slower in damp conditions, poly-star buckets remain operational long after other screeners have stopped. This enables faster turnaround times, as there is no need to wait for material to dry, which also frees up valuable storage space. Operational Advantages In addition to performance, poly-star screening buckets offer several operational advantages related to cost and efficiency. Screening buckets require a significantly lower initial investment than tracked or static screeners. This improves accessibility for smaller businesses and makes it economical to screen smaller volumes of material . Operating costs are also lower due to simplified maintenance and the ability to use existing on-site machinery. Fewer machines and fewer operators result in reduced running costs. Efficiency improves further because screening buckets allow screening and loading to occur in a single operation. They can also be taken directly to the material, which reduces unnecessary material handling. Noise pollution is another important consideration. Screening buckets are much quieter than traditional screening plant, making them ideal for sites with noise restrictions. Gyru-Star 3-120HE screening bucket recycling demolition waste on a construction site in Sweden Why Gyru-Star Is the Best Option With many screening buckets on the market, choosing the right solution can be challenging. Gyru-Star stands out because it has been engineered specifically to address the practical issues operators face every day, including contamination risks, compatibility with modern machinery and long-term durability. While poly-star buckets already offer clear advantages over traditional screening plant, Gyru-Star enhances these benefits through thoughtful design and industry-leading features that make the equipment more reliable, more efficient and easier to use. No Contamination Gyru-Star screening buckets are engineered to minimise contamination risks. The carbon belt driveline contains no oil or grease, and the driveline housing is completely sealed to prevent leaks should any hydraulic components become damaged. Sealed bearings are used throughout the attachment, which eliminates the need for grease. Most screening buckets rely on chain-driven systems enclosed in oil baths or unsealed housings. These systems present a clear risk of oil or grease contamination and typically require more maintenance. Compatibility and Optimisation Gyru-Star offers the largest screening bucket range on the market, with thirty-one models across six series for carriers from 1 to 30 tonnes. Each bucket is engineered for a specific carrier weight class to ensure optimal performance. This comprehensive range ensures there is a Gyru-Star screening bucket for every machine on site, including excavators from 1 to 30 tonnes, loaders from 1 to 15 tonnes and skid steer or compact track loaders from 1 to 9 tonnes. Gyru-Star buckets are also compatible with tiltrotators and automatic quick couplers without requiring any special modifications. The manufacturer, Wheatway Solutions, is also a member of the Open-S Alliance . Industry-Leading Features as Standard Not all screening buckets are built equal, and Gyru-Star buckets come with a range of industry-leading features as standard. In addition to the aforementioned carbon belt drive (unique to Gyru-Star), each bucket has a multi-layer monocoque shell , which is reinforced with HB400 wear-resistant steel. This reduces the bucket weight, allowing for a larger screening area and improving efficiency. The shell also incorporates a stainless steel non-stick floor, which prevents wet material from building up and ensures a consistent flow of material into the rotors. Lastly, to prevent accidental damage, all new Gyru-Star screening buckets (manufactured after Jan 2026) are fitted with a reverse protection valve. This limits the speed of the rotors when the bucket is run in reverse, allowing them to be cleaned without risking damage to the stars or driveline. This is ideal for sites where multiple operators will be using the bucket who may not be experienced with this type of attachment. Case Study: Successfully Implementing Poly-star Screening Buckets Rich Tayler of RJT Groundworks Services with his Gyru-Star screening bucket RJT Groundworks Services has reduced its landfill waste by almost 70 percent after investing in a Gyru-Star screening bucket. In peak periods, this reduction has delivered savings of up to £1,500 ($2,000) per month. We visited the company to learn how the bucket has transformed its operations. The Challenges of Traditional Screening Before using a Gyru-Star bucket, RJT Groundworks was producing roughly three truckloads of muck-away waste each week. Most of this waste consisted of soil and hardcore generated from landscaping, groundworks and fencing projects. The material was brought back to their yard in Devizes for processing and disposal. Almost all of this waste was sent to landfill at a cost of £350 to £450 ($473 to $608) per load. Costs escalated quickly during busy periods, prompting Managing Director Rich Tayler to seek an alternative approach that would enable more effective material recovery and reduce disposal costs. The company initially tried a static vibratory screen, which worked well when soil was dry but performed poorly with damp material. As a result, much of the usable topsoil and hardcore still ended up in landfill. Recognising the need for a more versatile solution, Rich contacted his local Gyru-Star dealer, Reeds Construction and Engineering . Finding the Right Tool As the company already operated a JCB Agri telehandler, the Gyru-Star 3-150L provided the ideal fit. The bucket offered low running costs, compatibility with existing machinery and flexibility thanks to the Kustom Konnect Universal Rail System supplied by Reeds. The three-rotor design and flexible poly-stars enabled Rich to separate fines and oversize without crushing or shredding, even with wet or root-bound material. The stainless steel non-stick floor ensured consistent performance in damp conditions, allowing Rich to screen material as soon as it arrived. Rich operating the Gyru-Star 3-150L screening bucket on his JCB telehandler Proven Results in All Conditions After nearly a year of use, the 3-150L has delivered outstanding results. Landfill waste is down by almost 70 percent, and monthly savings during peak periods can reach £1,500 (£2,000). Additional savings come from replacing purchased topsoil, typically £45 ($61) per tonne, with reclaimed material. More than a thousand tonnes have been screened without significant wear to the poly-stars. Rich has found that a steady, lighter loading technique delivers the best results, as it allows the stars to begin their rolling action much more quickly. Although each individual bucket load may contain slightly less material, the faster rolling action dramatically improves the overall cycle time, making the entire process quicker and more consistent. The bucket has also become a valuable on-site tool for spreading topsoil before turfing or seeding. The rolling action of the stars produces a fine, even layer and significantly reduces manual labour. Its strongest advantage remains performance in damp conditions. Material that used to sit for weeks while drying can now be processed immediately, which speeds up recycling and frees up vital yard space. Reflecting on the investment, Rich offered a simple summary: “I wish I had bought one sooner.” Transform Your Screening Process If you’re looking to cut disposal costs and streamline your screening operations, now is the perfect time to explore the Gyru‑Star range. - Case Study: Screening for Success with the Gyru-Star 3-100MAX
Patryk's 6 Ton Kubota with one of his Gyru-Star screening buckets In August 2013, MTT Sweden AB took delivery of their first Gyru-Star screening buckets. Patryk Haglund was one of the first contractors in Scandinavia to purchase a Gyru-Star ‘sorteringskopor’ from them, and he has had one on almost every job since. Since then, he has had several Gyru-Star screening buckets for his 6-ton Kubota excavator, but for the past 5 years, he has predominantly been using a 3-100MAX. Whilst many customers purchase their Gyru-Star attachments for a specific application, Patryk has found an almost endless list of uses for his, from spreading soil for seeding grass to gritting icy roads in the bitter Swedish winters. As a general contractor, Patryk works on a wide variety of projects including new build housing developments, landscaping, drainage and even some forestry work. Regardless of the project, he says he always has a Gyru-Star screening bucket with him. "The bucket makes everything easier. You can take it everywhere; I’m always finding new uses for it" When we caught up with Patryk recently, he explained how his screening buckets have allowed him to finish projects ahead of schedule and save both himself and his customers money. One of the major advantages he identified, was that he could recycle construction waste for use elsewhere on the site. Not only did this reduce the project's overall costs, but he could avoid downtime whilst waiting for material deliveries in rural areas. However, this isn’t all he has used his screening bucket for. Here are just a few of the applications Patryk has found for his Gyru-Star screening buckets: Gritting icy roads in the winter. Removing screws, nails and other metalwork from burn pit ash. Cleaning up old roof thatching. Spreading soil ready for grass seed. Removing soil from roots and tree stumps, so it could be used to fill in the hole. Cleaning up construction waste and separating the useable materials from the scrap, including removing large pieces of polystyrene, without making a mess. Removing fines from demolition waste. Turning excavated material from pool constructions into topsoil for use around the pool area. Separating kitchen tiles from a pile of demolition waste, without shattering them. Backfilling cable and pipe trenches. Patryk also spoke very highly of Gyru-Star’s Scandinavian dealer, MTT Sweden AB. He told us that the relationship Michael (of MTT) has with his customers enables a level of customer service he has never found anywhere else. What Do You Use Your Gyru-Star Screening Bucket for? - Made in Britain: Strengthening Our Manufacturing Capabilities and Supply Chain
All Gyru-Star screening buckets are designed and built in Great Britain. This includes not only the bucket shells and final assembly but also the vast majority of internal components. As a result, every Gyru-Star product proudly carries the Made in Britain trademark. Support Throughout the Life of the Product In recent years, we’ve made significant investment in expanding our in-house manufacturing capabilities. This allows us to produce more components ourselves and maintain full control over quality and lead times. Crucially, these capabilities also ensure long-term parts availability. By manufacturing components in-house, we can continue supplying genuine spare parts for every Gyru-Star screening bucket we’ve ever built, regardless of when it was built. A Local, Resilient Supply Chain All raw materials, components, and subcontract work are sourced exclusively from UK-based suppliers. Every supplier we work with is located within 170 miles of our head office. Keeping our supply chain local reduces lead times, limits exposure to global disruption, and ensures parts are readily available when customers need them. It also allows us to maintain consistent quality across every component we supply. Working with Specialist UK Manufacturers Where specialist expertise is required, we partner with leading UK manufacturers who understand both the product and its application. Our polyurethane poly-star system, for example, was developed in collaboration with one of the UK’s leading polymer moulding specialists. Other externally sourced components are supplied by trusted specialists, selected for their technical expertise and proven reliability. This collaborative approach ensures every component meets our stringent quality standards. What This Means for Our Customers From manufacturing through to long-term parts support, our UK supply chain allows us to stand behind every Gyru-Star screening bucket with confidence. It’s how we ensure reliability, performance, and support throughout the full life cycle of your attachment.
- The Importance of Genuine Parts
Even the most robust attachments rely on proper maintenance and the right components to keep performing at their best. Access to genuine spare parts and service kits is essential for optimal performance, reducing downtime, and extending the working life of your attachment. Using genuine parts eliminates uncertainty, safeguards performance, and ensures each replacement component meets the same rigorous standards as the original. Using genuine parts is the simplest way to keep your screening bucket operating at its best. Protect Your Screening Bucket Gyru-Star screening buckets are designed as complete systems. The driveline, hydraulic system, and poly-star rotors are all engineered around specific components, with precise tolerances and material specifications. Introducing parts that do not meet these standards could not only impact performance but also accelerate wear or damage other components. Using non-genuine parts can also put your warranty at risk. What might seem like a cost saving upfront can quickly result in expensive repairs and extended downtime. Genuine parts remove this risk, giving you confidence that your bucket is being maintained to the same standard it was originally built to. Guarantee Compatibility Sourcing replacement parts shouldn’t be a guessing game. Gyru-Star Genuine Parts are purpose-built for your screening bucket, guaranteeing compatibility. Each part is designed to fit seamlessly with existing components, regardless of whether your bucket is a recent model or ten years old. This eliminates any uncertainty over whether a part will fit, perform correctly, or require modification to install. By choosing genuine parts, maintenance becomes quicker and more straightforward. Installations are simpler, performance is consistent, and downtime is minimal. Quality You Can Trust The vast majority of Gyru-Star Genuine Parts are designed and manufactured in Great Britain, using carefully selected materials and following a stringent quality control process. Manufacturing in-house allows us to maintain full control over tolerances, materials, and quality standards, ensuring every component meets our exacting requirements. For the few parts we don’t manufacture ourselves, we work closely with trusted UK-based suppliers. This close supply chain ensures consistent quality, reliable availability, and reduced lead times when parts are required. Protect Your Investment with Genuine Parts Using Gyru-Star Genuine Parts is the simplest way to protect your investment and keep your screening bucket performing exactly as it should. There’s no guesswork, no compromise on quality, and no risk to your warranty. Just complete confidence that your bucket is being maintained to the same standard it was built to. - Case Study: Using Screening Buckets to Create High-Quality Compost [and Why the Gyru-Star 4-150MAX is Perfect for the Job]
Gyru-Star 4-150MAX on a Komatsu Compact Wheel Loader Key Information Bucket: Gyru-Star 4-150MAX Carrier: Komatsu Compact Wheel Loader Application: Recycling Compost into Topsoil for Local Cemeteries Location: Halmstad, Sweden Dealer: MTT Sweden AB The Case Study In Halmstad, Sweden, local cemeteries have been using the Gyru-Star 4-150MAX to recycle compost into high-quality topsoil. Not only has the screening bucket saved them time and money, but they have also found other ways to utilise this versatile attachment. “In the past, we have hired a local contractor who went over our compost with a harp, but it became quite expensive, and we saw that we could do the job ourselves with better results and in the long run at a lower cost,” says Lars Malm-berg, from the cemetery administration. His colleague Dan Nilsson has been responsible for operating the screening bucket. He has been using it to process large piles of compost with the Cemetery’s Komatsu compact wheel loader. He also believes that there are many advantages to using the Gyru-Star 4-150MAX. “The 4-150MAX creates a much better product than we had before. Being able to easily transport between our sites means that we can use it for far more than just creating topsoil”. They have also been using the bucket to recycle sand, gravel and demolition waste, from various churches in the area. “If we're going to dig up a lawn somewhere, we can process the material on-site. We don’t need to move it backwards and forwards to a screening plant” Nilsson added. “It’s a massive environmental benefit”. Lars Malmberg and Dan Nilsson The Gyru-Star bucket is currently used across five cemeteries in Halmstad, though it has also been used to help out other cemeteries in surrounding areas. “We see great merit with the bucket, not least when it comes to the environment”, says cemetery master Diana Svensson. The Gyru-Star 4-150MAX was purchased from MTT Sweden AB , Gyru-Star’s official Swedish distributor. You can find out more about Gyru-Star’s range of screening buckets here .
